Nobel 2017 Medicine at Hall, Rosbash and Young: They discovered the biological clock
American researchers Jeffrey Hall , Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young won 2017 Nobel for Medicine to study mechanisms that control circadian rhythms. The three American researchers have shown, since 1980's, how our internal clock works, which regulates sleep rhythms, eating behavior, metabolism, body temperature, hormone release, and blood pressure.

Share "Living on Earth," says announcement, "has adapted to rotation of planet. For many years we know that living beings, including men, have developed an internal clock that helps m to harmonize with regular rhythm of day and But how does mechanism exactly work? Hall, Rosbash and Young have managed to look inside this watch and find out how it works. Their findings explain how plants, animals, and men are able to shape ir rhythm vital to synchronize it with Earth's rotation "Share

The time of announcement

Share The first to notice existence of circadian rhythms in plants was an astronomer in 18th century. Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan had noticed that mimosa leaves widened by day and closed night. This also happened when plants are kept in dark. Sign that it is not direct light, but some internal cell mechanism to regulate this behavior. In 1970s, fruit flies - an insect that was widely used in laboratories to study basic biological mechanisms - had a gene called "period" capable of giving rhythm to internal clock. The three Nobel winners have shown that this gene oversees production of a protein (called Per) that accumulates in cells overnight and is gradually degraded by day. The award was given by Nobel Assembly Karolinska Institute of Stockholm. This year prize amounted to 9 million Swedish kronor, equal to about 940 thousand euros, to be divided among all winners (at most three for each prize). Over last five years, prize has dropped to around 2 million crowns, officially adjusting to low inflation rate and to avoid damaging capital of Foundation named after Alfred Nobel , Swedish inventor of dynamite. The award for medicine has been awarded since 1901 by six experts in Karolinska industry. Tuesday will be announced Nobel for Physics, Wednesday that for chemistry, Thursday will touch literature, Friday to peace and Monday 9 October to economy. So far, from 1901 to 2016, prizes have been awarded to 911 people, one third of whom are US.
