A new class of proteins that has just started being researched among scientists is “sirtuins.” A couple of scientists took this further to develop the “Sirtfood Diet,” which reportedly helps you stay healthy and fit. So what is it?
What Are Sirtuins?
Sirtuins are a class of proteins that have been found to have anti-aging properties, and have been linked to a longer lifespan and a reduced risk of cancer, as well as metabolic, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases in lower organisms and mammals.
Natural chemicals called “polyphenols” have been found to modulate sirtuins in your body. Foods such as dark chocolate, kale and wine contain polyphenols which mimic the biological effects of fasting and exercising. They trigger the “sirtuin pathway” to help biologically trigger weight loss.
Other powerful “sirtfoods” include red onions, strawberries, turmeric and cinnamon.
Therefore, a couple of UK nutritional medicine scientists decided to develop a “Sirtfood Diet” that could possibly help people regulate their weight more, and live a healthier lifestyle. There is still very little research regarding sirtuins, but there is no harm in trying.
What Is the Sirtfood Diet?
The developed diet focuses on sirtfood rich “green” smoothies and meals. Sirtfood green smoothies could include the following ingredients: kale, celery, green apples, matcha green tea, parsley, ginger and lemon juice.
Sirtfood meals could include all of the above as well as chocolate, olive oil, walnuts, soybeans, red onions, turmeric, cinnamon, strawberries (and much more).
A sirtfood breakfast could be soy yogurt sprinkled with walnuts, dark chocolate and mixed berries.
Lunch could include a salad with cucumbers, celery, kale, parsley, chopped walnuts with a mix of olive oil, ginger and lemon juice.
Dinner could be stir-fried prawns and kale, with buckwheat noodles.
The diet has a couple of phases:
Phase 1 is a total of seven days. On the first three days, your maximum daily calorie intake is 1000 calories. Have three sirtfood green smoothies and one sirtfood rich meal per day. For the last four days, have two green smoothies and three sirtfood meals, with a maximum of 1,500 calories.
Phase II is the maintenance phase, for a period of 14 days. Have three balanced sirtfood meals per day and one green smoothie
