About The Nordic Diet
This “New Nordic Diet” is one that is rooted mainly in foods eaten in Nordic countries, such as Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway. It was established back in 2004 by nutrition professionals as well as local California chefs as an attempt to improve people’s eating habits in the region.
The diet is similar to the Mediterranean diet, in that it’s mainly focused on fresh, real whole foods, such as whole grains, meat, seafood, root veggies, low-fat dairy, dark leafy greens, and a wide fruit variety. Here is what it is comprised of specifically:
* Seafood: salmon, mackerel, herring, trout, tuna and white fish
* Meats: wild game, poultry (white meats only)
* Root Veggies: onions, leeks, potatoes, carrots
* Leafy greens: broccoli, kale, cabbage
* Fruits & berries: blueberries, bilberries, lingonberries, plums, apples
* Dairy: milk, low-fat yogurt, cheese
* Whole Grains: rye, oats, barley
* Fats: Canola oil, seeds, nuts
Is It Good For You?
Just the very fact that the diet is absent of red meats, sugar, soda, fried foods and other foods that are heavily processed means that there is already one benefit you’ll be getting from it. The main problem in Western, and particularly American diets is that we rely heavily on sugary drinks, fast food and foods that are high in sugar such as cookies and cake. Therefore, the removal of those alone should show you great health benefits. It also doesn’t necessarily restrict your calories, but removes your intake of empty calories without real nutritional value. This can make you feel satiated quicker, since your body gets its required nutrients with fewer foods.
Secondly, the diet’s emphasis on fruits and veggies is also extremely beneficial, as they provide you with antioxidants. The lean meats, dairy proteins and whole grains also provide you with a healthy amount of fibers and carbohydrates for a good energy boost.
Several studies have also shown that this diet can help improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
