A new diet craze has people worried as a hashtag #waterfast is beginning to trend.
The controversial diet called “water fasting” does just what is described, however, it doesn’t mention much about what you’re able to eat. Actually, the diet says you’re not permitted to eat at all- not even the slightest shred of kale.
The only allowable item to ingest in your day is simply water. Intermittent fasting was trending for a while now, however, this new trend is taking things to the next level, bordering pure starvation.
According to the Independent, real estate agent, Elan Kels tried all other diets prior to stumbling upon “water fasting”.
“The idea is: you could do it as long as you have fat on your body, and that’s what gives you energy,” he said to the New York Post.
He hoped to ingest nothing more than water for a whopping 47 days.
Five days in, the New Yorker says he was surprised to be feeling more energized and more focused.
However, at day 28 the man wasn’t even able to get out of his bed due to his lack of energy, so he made the decision to give it up.
It isn’t clear where the diet originated, but its gathered a large social media following with over 17,600 posts on the #waterfasts hashtag on Instagram.
However, experts are not advocating the diet.
“There are lots that are bad about this ‘diet,’” says Jo Travers a dietician.
“For a start, there are pretty much no vitamins and minerals,” said The Low-Fad Diet’s author to The Independent.
“Most vitamins are water soluble and can’t be stored so you need them regularly throughout the day. Then there is no protein, which means the body has to break down muscle in order to recycle the amino acids into hormones and enzymes to stay alive.”
“You are basically starving yourself and that comes with huge health risks.”
