Two USC experts spoke about the truth regarding trendy diets which are very popular with many nowadays. They spoke about high protein and low carb diets such as the "Paleo" diet, which focuses on cutting down the number of carbohydrates consumed and focusing on meals and foods consisting of high amounts of protein.
Cutting out as many carbs as possible will severely reduce chances of cardiovascular disease as well as diabetes, says Michael Goran, co-director, and researcher at USC. He says that “A high-carb diet generates a lot of glucose, which means you have to produce more insulin to clear it. This stresses your body and, over time, can contribute to cardiovascular disease or diabetes risk.” While reducing the consumption and amount of carb intake is healthy, severely low levels can result in fatigue and exhaustion as your body adapts to a different method of getting its energy by burning fat instead.
The Mechanics Behind It
Sugary products, as well as many processed foods, contain a high amount of carbs which force the body to continuously produce high levels of insulin to balance the amount of glucose coursing through the body as a result of any diet consisting of large amounts of carb-filled products.
