Switching to a particular diet can be particularly challenging, but specifically switching to a vegan or vegetarian diet is something else. Several studies have correlated a vegan and vegetarian diet to lowered risks of diabetes, heart disease and a few cancers. It also helps people more easily lose weight than their meat-eating counterparts.
However, it is well known that the diet is not foolproof. There are several struggles with the diet that can lead you to not feeling as great as you should. Here are some things to look out for. If you suffer from any of these, identifying them can either help you find a way around them, or realize sooner that the diet just isn’t for you.
First off, the downside of having a vegan/vegetarian diet is that it needs meal planning a lot more than meat-eaters, especially in the beginning. You may not realize which foods contain meats or animal products and you may not realize which restaurants and cafes have vegan options, so it’s likely you might struggle with this at first. If you don’t have enough time to plan for your meals, you need to bare that in mind before going vegan.
Secondly, switching to beans, fruits, veggies and whole grain foods are amazingly healthy for you, but they can also be harsh on your stomach, leaving you gassy, bloated and crampy. Maybe ease your way into the diet before going right in can make that go away.
Thirdly is possibly being tired a lot of the time. Switching to veganism can make it harder for you to make sure you have a balanced meal. It’s a common misconception that sticking to veggies would automatically make you healthier. However, you need to make sure you get your adequate intake of healthy fats and lean proteins if you want to have as much energy as you’d like to.
